Select an appropriate place for your fire pit which is well drained and make sure the place does not have much trees and any flammable materials nearby. It should be an open area to make the gases pass by. Then start cleaning the place. You just need a shovel to dig the place approximately one foot deep. Try to avoid damaging the roots of the trees nearby that you encounter and the base of the fire pit should be made leveled.

The next important step is selecting the appropriate shape.  Most common and widely used shape for a fire pit is a circle or an oval. However it depends on your personal preference. Lay the fire bricks at the bottom of the pit and make sure the wood will not be touching the bottom of the soil while burning. Make sure the first block of fire bricks is perfectly positioned in the soil before taking further step.

The next step is laying the second layer of fire bricks next to the first one. Fix the sides tightly and line up the front and back edges. And lay the rest of the bricks to make the ring to complete and check whether all the blocks are perfectly leveled and lined up. Next step in how to build a brick fire pit is assembling the walls for the fire pit. Paste an adhesive material such as glue between two adjacent blocks and lay the block centering to the two blocks and make sure the interconnecting blocks fit well together. Continue this step until the second course is made finished. Add as many rows till you reach the desired height. But the height must be at least 20-25 inches below ground level so the wood will have a place to burn and it also keeps the wind away from blowing out the fire.

Fill the pit with gravel which supports the pit wall. You can also add some more rock layers which can prevent the bush and grass nearby by heating. You have a leave a little gap between the bricks which means letting air to pass by to the fire. Then insert a steel ring into the circle and adjust it to settle evenly with the top of the block wall and put your last course of gravel on it and you are done. Finally you should place the cap pieces on top of the fire bricks wall. And that would finish the fire pit.

Wait for a few days to allow the fire pit to dry before making the first fire. To make the external appearance of the pit more attracting, you can decorate the outside brick wall or build it like a small picnic area. The fire pit is not only used as a place to make fire but you can also place a grate on its top and can be used as a grill for cooking.
